Chapter 13

It was early morning the next day and Matt was up at the tactics room, eager to see what had transpired overnight. He knew, of course, but he still scanned the map for any additional problems. Not that he expected them, not immediately. If someone was moving in, unless he’d missed it late at night, they’d only appear midday at best on the map.

No, that wasn’t the reason he was up early.

What he was looking forward to was buying the Priest. Hiring them. Initial fear was washed over with the anticipation of a dopamine hit from going shopping. A quick check on the Tavern had him pause for a moment before he remembered that that was not where he picked up Priests. Still, now that he had the notification open, he paused to look it over just in case he had more slots.

No such luck.

Heroes Available to Recruit: Warrior, Ranger

Number of Available Hero Slots: 1

Though the available Heroes had him blinking.

“Huh. They changed.” Matt stared at the pair of options. The Warrior was quite clear – they had already run into one before. Individually stronger than the Warlord, but without the unit control that Warlords were able to provide. Weighing the two, Matt preferred a Warlord like Braskar over a plain Warrior.

Perhaps when he had more Hero slots, but he needed generals, not soldiers, right now.

That was probably the same problem with the Ranger. If they were at all like the Dungeons and Dragons class or even Sir Tolkien’s work, individually they were strong, but mostly as scouting units. Not particularly useful in this case.

“Though, if I get Aragorn, I bet I could make him glower at the female Heroes and they’d be all ‘oh, Aragorn, please ravage me with your stringy, unwashed hair and manly, manly scruff.’”

Perhaps Matt had issues with the character after a particular bad college relationship, when his ex had complained about his lack of facial hair and had compared him to said ranger. Like, how was he supposed to compete against an imaginary and perfect king?

Well, in that case, the answer had been not at all.

Yeah, no Ranger for him. For a lot of reasons.

“Priest, Priest, Priest. Time to grab a Priest,” Matt said softly to himself. A flicker of his fingers and the Temple was called up. No changes there, so confirming the purchase was quick. Two hundred gold disappeared out of his treasury in moments and a new notification came up.

The first of its kind in a while.

“Damn, those are good stats,” Matt said, eyeing the numbers. “Though… the skills are different? Didn’t the other one have things like curses and healing?”

No answer. He could poke at Irvine to get an answer. The man had a better memory than him. But it didn’t matter. After all, he had something more important to do, especially as he eyed the portrait that came with all the information.
